Commodity Futures Market in Nepal

Evolution of Commodity Futures in Nepal:

Futures trading in Nepal was started after the establishment of Commodity and Metal Exchange Nepal (COMEN) in Dec. 16, 2006. COMEN commenced futures trading in numbers of commodities on 25th Jan. 2007 on a national scale. The basket of commodities has grown substancially since then to include cash crops, food grains, oil seeds, metals and bullion (which launched on December 2006) among others. In initial period of its operation, there was futures trading in agro-products such as rice and daal etc. However, trading on such products is not taking palce at current due to the lack of warehouse and quality grading.

Mercantile Exchange Nepal Ltd. (MEXN) started its operation from 14th Aug. 2007 as the second commodity exchange of Nepal. It is offering trade in market groups like Precious metals, food grains, enegy and industrial metals on a national scale. It is regarded as the number one commodity futures exchange of Nepal. MEX conducts its futures markets through its standard and tested automated trading accessibility to trader which offers the leading benchmarks and trades the futures in its markets.

Thirdly, Nepal Derivative Exchange Ltd. (NDEX), started its operation from 20th Nov. 2010. It is offering the trade in market groups of Precious metals, Base metals, Energy products and Agro products.

Other commodity exchanges that are operating in Nepal are :
Wealth Exchange Nepal (WEX)
Commodity Futures Exchange (CFX)
Everest Commodity Exchange (ECX)

There are two commodity spot exchages available in Nepal which are
Nepal Spot Exchange (NSE): 2010 and
National Spot Exchange (NSE)

There are more than 15 commodity exchanges that are on pipeline to operate in Nepalese Market.
